You gotta be kidding me with those Real Life examples. Let's face. this is NOT RL , it has a bit of this and a bit of that to simulate some aspects. but C'mon!.... Games are all about being fun, if people aren't having fun, they don't play it , and the game ends up dying. People move on, its that simple . Like the example I gave with Wow and my druid. 50Gold a respecc. It's not much nowdays I think, but I played WoW from start. it -WAS- a LOT, and trust me...I learned both roles 100%, it wasnt the respecc that made me learn less about one role or another. Respeccs/retraining is essential to a game. No one wants to end up with a piece of graphics that can't do damage propely or heal propely or even tank. Really. respeccs must exist, or I would reroll a character everytime I misclicked an icon during a feat selection . Untill I gave up on the class/game ^^

Well I'm just saying I would find it more FUN if I had to train up in different skills to get good at them rather than having to pay some money to some invisible force which just magically makes you good at something.
You can still have realism in a fantasy setting. For example, you can have magic, but it tends to have an explanation for example from worshiping some sort of god. Basically what I'm saying is a fantasy world is a world where everything in it connects and justifies something else (at least in theory for a good one). That is what I mean by realism. Not how close it is to the real world. If, in a fantasy game or book, something happens and I'm just expected to accept its true without any justification of why it's true then it always bugs me. OK it's not the end of the world but I would much rather it if it had an explanation in the context of the world that it is in.
For fun and skill I'm going to stick to FPS games, for lore and immersion and character development I'll stick to RPG (which can also be fun but in more of a satisfaction way).

So you're not playing AoC for fun and skill? ... I don't see why you blast respeccs so hard tbh. Yes they're hard to implement in a character/lore way, but that's where the GAME PLAY kicks in , is it not? You can't have it all. Nor you nor your character ( or friends/group) should have to suffer for "mistakes" or game exploring. After all...the game is brand new....do you really want to make 2 of each class to have each with one tree? I think your taking the respecc aspect of the game/games too seriously if you ask me ^^;... IT hads for fun. besides...it can have all sorts of RPing doors opened, you just have to explore them. Example : " Many perils you have faced young one...yet...the true calling of your soul is coming out the more you grow....embrace it now and become what you're destined to become...I can help you...just say the words child....and I shall help you....to become so much ...more." *Trainer/NPC cleans your feat tree* " Go now child...explore your soul true desire. As from now on, you're free again ". Thats for first time respecc. You can even remain a healer, you just wipe those pesky talents you used to level . For second/third/fourth wtv times respeccing : " You come again child, but your not a child anymore....no...this time..you come seeking the knowledge of your mirror self. The knowledge that you feel it's missing from you, the one that become your shadow or your light....yes...I see it in your eyes....defiance, hope, desire and fear....I can unveil that cloudy mirror for you...for a price.....but if you do wish to do it ...you will have to shatter it yourself and find out what lies beyond it!" *Pays X Coins to NPC* *Wipe* "You broke yourself, yet you stand together....it should be interesting to see what scars are yours....and what scars were his/her *points at shattered mirror while laughing* So many explanations if you really see into it ^_^ Respecc is a MUST. whatever price or penalty it brings must be endured or I bet people would go tired of this game after 1-2 months since they couldnt actually do anything to change the mess they had done. If you ever played Anarchy Online ( From FC aswell), you'll remember/learn that there were something called RESET POINTS....There were people that would go from 1 - 200 without spending IP ( skill points ) and therefor sucking arse...cause the RP's were short. too short. Im sure FC learned from that and changed it for AoC ( AO got some improvments aswell ^^)

OK I see your logic. However I am not specifically talking about the feats in age of conan, but more about character progression in general. I would prefer it if, lets say you're a warrior, you could train with an axe and you gain various axe skills along the way. Lets say you then wanted to start training with a sword, you do that for a while and gain skills and abilities to do with swords. I would find it ok then if you could switch between these two professions at will. So yes basically I would like unlimited respecs, but you have to train on a particular tree with a particular weapon to unlock feats on that tree.
I haven't thought this through so well and i've probably changed my opinion a bit, but I just generally don't like the modern class and character progression system.

What you mean is, you wanted to be proficient with any weapon, but you would only be able to take full advantage of that weapon type if you had the feats/specc for it? Forgive me if I misunderstood you if not ^^ I am very happy with AoC skill system atm, it's not Anarchy Online ( where you could invest in such specializations. imagine a priest that could use 2handed swords as long as you spent skill points there!....I wish....) but it gets the job done!

Priest of Tempus or Torm in 3rd editition would be quite comforttable with a greatsword!
